Christine Bagshaw

Inspired by some of Trevor’s holiday images and, of course, the Wigan 10 presentation last year, I was excited to book a few days in Venice during the 2010 Carnevale.

The day finally arrived, and we touched down at Marco Polo Airport on a dull, wet Saturday. The day quickly brightened, however, and we continued to enjoy lovely bright sunshine for the next few days accompanied by a chilly wind! Of course, my favourite camera accompanied me everywhere and I had a great time enjoying not only unrestricted but positively welcomed street photography! (I love Venice!)

Some brief comments on the five images I’ve selected have been added to give some idea of the experience. If you’re planning to make the same trip another year, I hope the comments help. Top tips are probably to take (and use!) ND/grad filters, have sharp elbows, but the crowds are slightly less dense midweek, although there’s arguably a little less going on. Most important of all, take a very large wallet full of lottsa Euros!

Enjoy!

Christine.

Gorgeous colourful carnival masks on a market stall I think gives a striking image (well, for colour at least!) and it wasn’t hard to achieve, especially during the evening when you can really open up the aperture. At first I wondered if I’d be told off for daring to photograph goods I wasn’t buying, but no-one batted an eyelid.

Costumed figure in front of St. Mark’s. Here, typical of everywhere really, crowds of tourists were the problem – you have to be quick!

One of five stunning ‘actors’ wearing a Medusa-like costume (bedecked with shining green ‘serpents’). The crowd density and tourists posing in turn with them, unfortunately, made it impossible to capture them all together or even get a decent full length shot of one of them. You also need to watch your background - the architecture is beautiful, but can be very distracting, I’ve found, in some of the images.

Perched on the foredeck of a vaporetto taking us back along the Grand Canal, early evening. Lovely warm light, but see the crowds on the Rialto Bridge!

This striking pair – the ‘moon couple’ – graciously posed for me. I’ve had to slightly reduce the harsh shadow (particularly on the face), and clone out some background distractions in Photoshop to achieve a passable ‘snap’.
