The Wild Side

“Blooming Brilliant!” and “Some of the best wildlife images we’ve seen” were just two of the comments heard following an evening with John Boyd ARPS DPAGB.

Many members knew John from his time as a member of Wakefield Camera Club whilst others may have known him from his time on the radio and television with Radio Aire and the BBC in Humberside and Leeds as a sports presenter. In 2005 after almost a quarter of a century behind the microphone John retired and began to pursue other interests including photography. When his wife bought him a pass for a falconry and he photographed a beautiful Eagle Owl and in flight at that, he had his eureka moment and immediately re-tooled for Wildlife and Sport photography.

The images were fantastic, far too many to list, but birds are John’s main passion with images ranging from the smallest Gold Crest taken at Bempton to the largest White Tailed Sea Eagle captured on the Isle of Mull and just about everything in-between including Short Eared Owls, Waxwings, Nuthatches, Cuckoos, Curlews, Hoopoes and that is just so far in 2020. We were also shown some equally good images of the Stags at Studley Royal, Pine Martens, Hares, Otters, Horse racing, Motorbike Racing, Football and Rugby.

The evening however was not just about the images, we must also mention the narration that accompanied each image or sequence of images. John provided some sound advice about each situation in which he took the images but there was even more, it was the story telling, the humour that shone through, the experience behind a mike that made for an evening that was just Blooming Brilliant!
